Fragility, conflict, and violence (FCV) complicate development efforts, but more fundamentally, it directly impacts people's livelihoods through insecurity, displacement, and violence. Ending extreme poverty is only possible by tackling FCV as a development challenge. By 2030, nearly half of the world's extremely poor will live in countries affected by FCV. The total number of forcibly displaced people is estimated to be 103 million[i]. At the same time, around 81 percent of the estimated 193 million [ii] people experiencing acute food insecurity are in countries affected by FCV.​

This is the 18th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness, covering 99.7 per cent of the world's population. Produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), the GPI is the world's leading measure of global peacefulness.

n the first four months of 2024, conflict related deaths globally amounted to 47,000. If the same rate continues for the rest of this year, it would be the highest number of conflict deaths since the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The global economic impact of violence in 2023 was $19.1 trillion or $2,380 per person.

Fragility and conflict pose a critical threat to the global goal of ending extreme poverty. Between 1990 and 2015, successful development strategies reduced the proportion of the world’s people living in extreme poverty from 36 to 10 percent. But in many fragile and conflict-affected situations (FCS), poverty is stagnating or getting worse. The number of people living in proximity to conflict has nearly doubled worldwide since 2007. In the Middle East and North Africa, one in five people now lives in such conditions.

Fragility, conflict, and violence (FCV) is a critical development challenge that threatens efforts to end extreme poverty, affecting both low- and middle-income countries.  Conflicts drive 80% of all humanitarian needs and, by 2030, up to two third of the world’s extreme poor could live in FCV settings.
