Barry Farm-Hillsdale was created under the auspices of the Freedmen's Bureau in 1867 in what was then the outskirts of the nation's capital. Residents built churches and schools, and the community became successful. In the 1940s, youth from the community courageously desegregated the Anacostia Pool, and Barry Farm Dwellings was built to house war workers. In the 1950s, community parents joined the fight to desegregate schools in Washington, D.C., as local leaders fought off plans to redevelop the area. Both the women and the youth of Barry Farm Dwellings, then public housing, were at the forefront of the fight to improve their lives and those of their neighbors in the 1960s, but community identity was being subsumed into the larger Anacostia neighborhood. Curator and historian Alcione M. Amos tells these little-remembered stories.

A Sephardi Turkish Patriot explores the life of Gad Franco (1881-1954), a prominent Sephardi journalist, then a lawyer and a jurist, who worked relentlessly for the Jewish community's acceptance as part of the national Turkish polity, and for the consolidation of the rule of law. This historical biography, written by his grandson, takes the reader from fin-de-siecle Izmir, to the Istanbul of the Roaring Twenties and beyond, tracing his footsteps. The world of Sephardi Jewry, the convulsions and conflicts of the late Ottoman Empire, and the birth, ruthless consolidation and promising reforms of the young Turkish Republic, provide the context to Gad Franco's intriguing life-story. Inflamed by ethno-nationalism, cleavages between the Muslim majority and Turkey's ethnic minorities deepened in the 1930s, leading to their outright harassment during World War II. By then a wealthy, respected jurist, Jewish community spokesperson and friend of the government, Gad Franco was expropriated of all his assets and deported to labor camp, in a brutal campaign to Turkify the economy, imposed on all minorities. The painful aftermath included his disbarment and his financial collapse, as well as the departure of most family members. As its belonging to the nation had been so dramatically denied, half of the Turkish Jewish community migrated to Israel in the 1950s, putting an end to Gad Franco's hopes of its integration and acceptance.
Riverblindness in Africa by
The remarkable story of how a large public-private partnership worked to control and defeat riverblindness--a scourge which had devastated rural communities and impeded socioeconomic development throughout much of Sub-Saharan Africa for generations. Riverblindness (onchocerciasis)--a pervasive neglected disease, transmitted by the blackfly, that causes horrific itching, disfigurement, and loss of vision--is also known as "lion's stare" in reference to the fixed, lifeless glare of the eyes blinded by the disease. The disease has destroyed countless lives for generations, particularly in Africa. Its effects are so devastating that the areas where it is most common (large expanses of land around rivers where the fly breeds) end up abandoned as villages move farther and farther away to more arid environments in order to escape the fly-biting, and hence the disease. The disease devastates communities from multiple angles: a large portion of each stricken community's population is disabled, often permanently blind in the prime of life, placing a burden on the rest, and communities' efforts to escape infection force them to move to areas where farming is less productive. To defeat riverblindness would not only release these communities from the heavy toll of the disease, but would also open more fertile areas in Africa to be inhabited, thus alleviating extreme poverty. These were the goals of the World Bank, led by then-president Robert McNamara, when launching a partnership to combat riverblindness more than forty-five years ago. In this book, Bruce Benton tells the remarkable story of that partnership's success. An authoritative account of the launch and scale-up of the effort, the book covers the transformation of the fight from a top-down high-tech operation to a grassroots drug treatment program covering all of endemic Africa. How, Benton asks, did the effort become such a unique partnership of UN agencies, donors, NGOs, a major pharmaceutical company, universities, African governments, and the stricken communities themselves? Highlighting the importance of disease control in alleviating absolute poverty and promoting development, Benton examines the key developments, individuals, and notable qualities of the partnership in realizing success. He also extracts lessons from this particular story for addressing future challenges through partnership. Its agent for this was the Committee on Public Information (CPI), established by President Woodrow Wilson one week after the United States entered the war in April 1917. Driven by its fiery chief, George Creel, the CPI reached every crevice of the nation, every day, and extended widely abroad. Creel extolled transparency but established front organizations. Overseas, the CPI secretly subsidized news organs and bribed journalists. At home, it challenged the loyalty of those who occasionally questioned its tactics. Working closely with federal intelligence agencies eager to sniff out subversives and stifle dissent, the CPI was an accomplice to the Wilson administration's trampling of civil liberties. Until now, the full story of the CPI has never been told. This book reviews economic policies and performance in Turkey since 2000. Coming out of a severe crisis at the turn of the century and years of coalition governments, the economy stabilized, supported by an IMF program, and recovered rapidly, buoyed by international capital flows. While high interest rates and currency appreciation attracted hot money, the construction sector and consumption growth led the economy in the 2010s. External debt piled up rapidly. The tide turned after 2011 as the ruling Justice and Development Party became overconfident after several election victories, started undoing structural reforms, and shifted from the parliamentary system to a one-person rule in 2018. Turkey has suffered from an insidious decay of institutions and a lack of respect for the rule of law. Unraveling inflation was made worse by the president's interventions in monetary policy by cutting policy interest rates, leaving the economy with even higher inflation and depleted foreign exchange reserves. While some see the recent appointments of the Minister of Finance and the Central Bank governor as credible attempts to return to economic orthodoxy, recovery will likely be arduous if not impossible, under the current political structure.
